 lets’s talk about potassium sparing diuretics , Potassium-sparing diuretics are one type of diuretic. They are weak diuretics usually prescribed in combination with other types of diuretics. They are used to increase the amount of fluid passed from the body in urine, whilst also preventing too much potassium being lost with it. Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic (water pill). It prevents your body from absorbing too much salt and keeps your potassium levels from getting too low. This medicine is also used to treat or prevent hypokalemia 

Is furosemide K sparing?

Thiazide diuretics, such as chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Hygroton), and hydrochlorothiazide (Esidrix, HydroDiuril, Microzide) tend to deplete potassium levels. So do loop diuretics, such as bumetanide (Bumex) and furosemide (Lasix).

When are potassium sparing diuretics used?

Potassium-sparing diuretics refers to drugs that cause diuresis without causing potassium loss in the urine and leading to hypokalemia. They are typically used as an adjunct in management of hypertension, cirrhosis, and congestive heart failure.



Who should not take diuretics / who are the contraindicated for diuretics 

  • Have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Are dehydrated.
  • Have an irregular heartbeat.
  • Are in the third trimester of pregnancy and/or have developed high blood pressure during your pregnancy.
  • Are age 65 or older.
  • Have gout

What are side effects of potassium sparing diuretics?

  • too little potassium in the blood.
  • too much potassium in the blood (for potassium-sparing diuretics)
  • low sodium levels.
  • headache.
  • dizziness.
  • thirst.
  • increased blood sugar.
  • muscle cramps

Which drug is not potassium sparing

Furosemide

A loop diuretic used to treat hypertension and edema in congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, renal disease, and hypertension.

Etacrynic acid

A diuretic used to treat ascites and edema in congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal disease.


Which diuretic is potassium-sparing

Examples of potassium-sparing diuretics include: Amiloride. Eplerenone (Inspra) Spironolactone (Aldactone, Carospir)

Is thiazide a potassium sparing diuretic

Thiazide / potassium-sparing diuretic combinations are used to treat hypertension, heart failure, and edema. They work by causing the kidneys to get rid of excess salt and water while retaining potassium. For this reason, triamterene is called a potassium sparing diuretic. By combining hydrochlorothiazide with triamterene, sodium and water are eliminated from the body without the loss of potassium. However, this drug may allow potassium levels to increase so potassium levels should be closely monitored.
