METHIMAZOLE

   

Methimazole is usually preferred over propylthiouracil because it reverses hyperthyroidism more quickly and has fewer side effects. Methimazole requires an average of six weeks to lower T4 levels to normal and is often given before radioactive iodine treatment. Methimazole can be taken once per day. Methimazole is used to treat hyperthyroidism, a condition that occurs when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. It is also taken before thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine therapy. This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses ,  ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

What does Methimazole do to cells

Methimazole prevents iodine and peroxidase from their normal interactions with thyroglobulin to form T4 and T3. This action decreases thyroid hormone production. Methimazole also interferes with the conversion of T4 to T3. Since T3 is more potent than T4, this also reduces the activity of thyroid hormones.

After methimazole treatment, body weight was initially increased (0–8 weeks), subsequently plateaued ( 8 – 24 weeks), and gradually decreased in the later period ( 24–52 weeks ) despite the decreased food intake.

What is the best time of day to take Methimazole?


Food in your stomach may change the amount of methimazole that is able to enter the bloodstream. To make sure that you always get the same effects, try to take methimazole at the same time in relation to meals every day. That is, always take it with meals or always take it on an empty stomach.

What happens if Methimazoleis high

Overdose symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, headache,  joint pain, fever , itching, swelling, or pale skin and easy bruising or bleeding.

Can Methimazole cause problems

swollen glands in your neck or jaw or liver problems – nausea, upper stomach pain , itching, tiredness, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice ( yellowing of the skin or eyes).


 
Methimazole available strength

Adult. The initial daily dosage is 15 mg for mild hyperthyroidism, 30 to 40 mg for moderately severe hyperthyroidism, and 60 mg for severe hyperthyroidism, divided into 3 doses at 8-hour intervals. The maintenance dosage is 5 to 15 mg daily.

Methimazole is a thionamide antithyroid agent that inhibits the synthesis of thyroid hormones.

Can Methimazole cause liver damage?

A frequent treatment for hyperthyroidism is antithyroid medications, either Methimazole or Propylthiouracil. It is known that both medications, as well as hyperthyroidism itself can affect the function of the liver, causing increases in blood levels of markers of liver function know as liver function tests.

Does Methimazole cause joint pain?

If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but serious side effects occur, yellowing eyes/skin, dark urine,  severe stomach / abdominal pain, persistent nausea/vomiting,  joint/muscle pain, change in the amount of urine.

Can Methimazole cause hair loss?

Hair loss is also a possible side effect of some antithyroid drugs, including methimazole and propylthiouracil ( PTU ). Doctors prescribe antithyroid drugs to treat an overactive thyroid.
