CEPHALOSPORIN
The cephalosporins are a class of β - lactam antibiotics originally derived from the fungus Acremonium , which was previously known as " Cephalosporium ". Together with cephamycins , they constitute a subgroup of β-lactam antibiotics called cephems.
Examples of cephalosporins ,
- Ancef and Kefazol (cefazolin)
- Ceclor and Cefaclor (cefaclor)
- Cefdinir.
- Ceftin and Zinacef (cefuroxime)
- Duricef (cefadroxil)
- Keflex and Keftabs (cephalexin)
- Maxipime (cefepime)
- Rocephin (ceftriaxone)
What drug class is cephalosporins
Cephalosporins are a large group of antibiotics that belong to a
class known as beta-lactams.
These drugs are used to treat bacterial infections including: Ear infections.
What is the meaning of cephalosporins
Cephalosporins are a type of antibiotic. Antibiotics are medications that treat bacterial infections. There are many types, often called classes, of antibiotics available. Cephalosporins are a type of beta-lactam antibiotic
What is cephalosporins used for
The cephalosporins are broad-spectrum antibiotics which are used for the treatment of septicaemia, pneumonia, meningitis, biliary-tract infections, peritonitis, and urinary-tract infections. The pharmacology of the cephalosporins is similar to that of the penicillins, excretion being principally renal.
What are cephalosporins used to treat
- skin or soft tissue infections.
- urinary tract
infections (UTIs)
- strep throat.
- ear infections.
- pneumonia.
- sinus infections.
- meningitis.
- gonorrhea
What is the action of cephalosporins
Cephalosporins are
bactericidal and have the same mode of action as other β-lactam antibiotics
(such as penicillins), but are less susceptible to β-lactamases. Cephalosporins disrupt the
synthesis of the peptidoglycan layer forming the bacterial cell wall.
- stomach upset.
- nausea.
- vomiting.
- diarrhea.
- yeast infection or oral thrush.
- dizziness
What is the indication of cephalosporins
Healthcare providers use cephalosporins to treat a variety of
bacterial infections,
especially for people who are allergic to penicillin, another common
antibiotic. Some examples of infections that
cephalosporins can treat include: skin or
soft tissue infections. urinary tract infections (UTIs)
what is the contraindication of cephalosporins
One of the contraindications
of cephalosporin is if patients are allergic to them or those that
have had an anaphylactic reaction to penicillin or other beta-lactams
antimicrobials.
