DEPRESSION

What is depression ,

Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems.

What are the type of depression ,

  • Major Depression.
  • Persistent Depressive Disorder.
  • Bipolar Disorder.
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
  • Psychotic Depression.
  • Peripartum (Postpartum) Depression.
  • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)
  • 'Situational' Depression.

What will happen during depression ,

The influx of cortisol triggered by depression also causes the amygdala to enlarge. This is a part of the brain associated with emotional responses. When it becomes larger and more active, it causes sleep disturbances, changes in activity levels, and changes in other hormones. People with depression were shown to have thicker grey matter in parts of the brain involved in self-perception and emotions.

For major depression,

  • Sufferers experience not only a depressed mood, but also have difficulty performing simple daily tasks, lose interest in their usual activities, extreme fatigue, sleep problems, or feelings of guilt and helplessness , Most doctors advise patients to take antidepressants for six months to a year after they no longer feel depressed , Stopping before that time can cause depression to return. Those are the main causes of depression
  • Abuse. Past physical, sexual, or emotional abuse can increase the vulnerability to clinical depression later in life.
  • Certain medications
  • Conflict.
  • Death or a loss.
  • Genetics.
  • Major events.
  • Other personal problems.
  • Serious illnesses

What are the drugs doctors prescribe for the depression ,

Doctors often start by prescribing an SSRI. This generation of antidepressants is now the most common class used for depression. Examples include citalopram (Celexa), escitalopram (Lexapro), paroxetine (Paxil, Pexeva), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), and sertraline (Zoloft). SSRIs include citalopram (Celexa), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil, Pexeva), sertraline (Zoloft) and vilazodone (Viibryd)

To avoid depression what should you do ,

  1. Get more sleep.
  2. Exercise more.
  3. Volunteer in nature.
  4. Spend time outdoors.
  5. Cultivate eudaimonic happiness.

What are the top antidepressants .

  • Prozac (fluoxetine)
  • Paxil (paroxetine)
  • Zoloft (sertraline)
  • Celexa (citalopram)
  • Luvox (fluvoxamine)
  • Lexapro (escitalopram)
  • Trintellix (vortioxetine)
  • Viibryd (vilazodone)

Depression causes physical changes in the Brain

The researchers analysed the MRI Scans of over 1700 patients with major depression and found that the hippocampus shrinks in relation to recurrent and persistent depression even in young people. These adverse physical brain changes can be reversed, especially if treatment is continued. In depression there is shrinkage in the connections between nerve cells whereas in dementia there is death of nerve cells. It is important to eat green leafy vegetables and good quality animal protein to provide folic acid and vitamin B 12 to enable the brain to make neurotransmitters. This process of manufacturing neurotransmitters (such as serotonin, adrenalin and dopamine) requires a chemical pathway known as methylation. Some people with depression are slow methylators and this perpetuates the depressive illness, and can also cause anxiety. There is a blood test that can be done to see if you have a defective MTHFR gene that causes slow methylation. If you are a slow methylator, you will need to take the activated form of folic acid called folinic acid because regular folic acid supplements do not work.
